CBD and Memory: What the Research Shows

Memory is precious. It plays a vital role in every process and moment in our lives. When it starts to fail, it can be scary. Nothing lasts forever, and if you’re 65 or older, it might begin to decline, no matter how well you take care of yourself. In the U.S., 16 million people experience memory impairment. However, these aren’t severe conditions, such as dementia or Alzheimers. Instead, it’s a natural decline. You might be wondering, what can I do to slow down memory loss, and you wouldn’t be alone. Billions of people worldwide are searching for answers. Now, research shows CBD and memory have a connection. Here’s why consumers are adding the hemp extract to their

What is Natural Cognitive Decline

A common complaint “just can’t remember like they used to”  What exactly is “natural cognitive decline?” It’s more than simply forgetting where you put your car keys once in a while. it means a gradual worsening in cognitive ability, such as memory and thinking skills.

Memory issues are common as you age, especially for people 65 and older. It’s normal to forget where you put your glasses or parked the car, as you age. This happens because of a decline in mental function or cognitive abilities. These changes are not the same as the memory loss associated with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or stroke.

Age-related memory loss is not a disease, but it does affect the quality of life. It’s often frustrating and can cause people to withdraw from activities they once enjoyed.

Studies About CBD and Memory

Research about CBD is abundant. However, reports involving human participants are still few and far between. Despite that, what’s available is eye-opening.

Cannabidiol and Harm from Prolonged THC Use

CBD is an all-natural plant compound.

Several reports are available about using CBD to reverse damage from long-term cannabis use, and more specifically, THC. In addition to helping the body recover, the compound is believed to have neuroprotective properties that can protect against further damage.

“Our findings suggest a restorative effect of CBD on the subicular and CA1 subfields in current cannabis users, especially those with greater lifetime exposure to cannabis. While replication is required in a larger, placebo-controlled trial, these findings support a protective role of CBD against brain structural harms conferred by chronic cannabis use.”

CBD and Memory for Improving Cannabis User’s Recall Abilities

A 2018 study took 20 frequent cannabis users averaging 25 years of age and had them take 200mg of CBD daily. (We don’t recommend consumers try this at home. A 200mg dose of CBD is a significant amount. Even broken into two 100-mg servings, it could lead to extreme daytime drowsiness.) The participants continued to use cannabis as usual during the trial.

“CBD was well tolerated with no reported side effects; however, participants retrospectively reported reduced euphoria when smoking cannabis. No impairments to cognition were found, nor were there deleterious effects on psychological function. Importantly, participants reported significantly fewer depressive and psychotic-like symptoms at PT relative to BL and exhibited improvements in attentional switching, verbal learning, and memory.”

Learning, CBD, and Memory

Another research paper involving learning and memory in 2018 investigated fear-conditioning and CBD. The mice given CBD performed better than those without it, and the overall results found more studies are necessary to confirm the relationship between CBD and memory.

CBD and Cognitive Function

Some of the more exciting studies involve overall cognitive abilities and CBD. A more recent report from 2020, “The Impact of Cannabidiol on Human Brian Function: A Systematic Review,” explains,

“Neuroimaging studies have shown that acute CBD induces significant alterations in brain activity and connectivity patterns during resting state and performance of cognitive tasks in both healthy volunteers and patients with a psychiatric disorder. This included modulation of functional networks relevant for psychiatric disorders, possibly reflecting CBD’s therapeutic effects.”

What Does the Future Hold for CBD and Memory?

Studies are ongoing and more data will be available over the next few years. However, for the time being, researchers know CBD is a safe daily supplement. Many consumers report better performance in memory-related activities, such as at work, school, and recreational tasks, like playing board games or participating in sports. Consider joining them by taking CBD every day to promote overall wellness.
